Trillian is on of the few tools that will allow you to login and chat with someone on yahoo and someone from msn and other instant messenger programs all from the same interface. The newest version also allows you to use it to read and send text through:

While trillian is mainly used as a client that you download to your computer (mac version coming soon they say) - it is also now usable on your iphone, or through a web interface. As far as online web multi-branded IM chat goes, Meebo has been quite popular.
Meebo allows you to connect to multiple instant messenger networks all through a web page - allowing you to keep up with people through multiple networks is cool, not sure I love depending upon an open window for it, although I think I saw something about a firefox plugin, so maybe it’s not necessary these days. One reviewer of the firefox plugin says that you still need to have a tab open with meebo to use it - so maybe it still does take up some browser real estate - but it’s free, so how can we complain?
